We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Coding Team Lead to oversee and support our Emergency Department (ED) Professional Fee (ProFee) coding team. The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of medical coding, specifically in the area of E/M services, and demonstrate strong leadership and organizational skills. This role involves ensuring coding accuracy, compliance with regulatory requirements, and efficient workflow management.

Coding Team Lead – ED ProFee Coding

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Team Management:
    • Supervise, mentor, and guide a team of professional fee coders specializing in ED services.
    • Conduct regular team meetings to discuss updates, challenges, and improvements.
    • Provide training and professional development opportunities for team members. 
  • Coding and Compliance:
    • Ensure accurate and timely coding of ED professional fee services, adhering to CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS coding guidelines.
    • Conduct regular audits of coded records to ensure compliance with internal and external regulations, including CMS and payer-specific guidelines.
    • Implement and monitor coding policies and procedures to maintain high standards of quality and compliance.
  • Quality Assurance:
    • Review and resolve coding discrepancies and denials, providing feedback and corrective action plans as needed.
    • Collaborate with the Quality Assurance team to develop and update coding guidelines and protocols.
    • Ensure continuous improvement in coding accuracy and productivity metrics.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with physicians, ED staff, and other healthcare professionals to clarify documentation and improve coding practices.
    • Serve as a liaison between the coding team and other departments, facilitating effective communication and problem-solving.
    • Participate in coding-related projects, initiatives, and committees as assigned.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting:
    • Generate and analyze coding productivity and accuracy reports to track team performance.
    • Provide regular updates to management on coding activities, issues, and achievements.
    • Utilize data to identify trends, areas for improvement, and opportunities for process optimization.

 

Qualifications/Criteria:

  • Education:
    • Certification in medical coding (CPC or CCS) required.
    • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or a related field is a plus.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 2 years of professional coding experience, with extensive experience in ED ProFee coding and E/M services.
    • Leadership or supervisory experience is a plus.
  • Skills and Competencies:
    • Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
    • Proficient in using coding software and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
    • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
    • Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities.
    • Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and compliance.
